There are many types of evaluation study. They differ in their primary objectives, their subjects, timing and orientation.
The table below explains the terms used for a wide range of different types of evaluation studies. | Type | Description | | Sector | Aid to a particular sector, such as health or agriculture. As with thematic evaluations, these cover a number of projects and country programmes | | Sector programme | Sector or programme aid to a particular country | | Country programme | All types of aid (project and non-project) to one country | | Thematic | One theme, such as gender or environment, across a number of projects or country programmes, or across an organisation as a whole | | Aid instrument | One aid instrument, such as technical assistance, humanitarian aid, or balance of payments support | | Synthesis | A synthesis of the findings from a number of evaluations of individual projects or programmes | | Joint | Conducted jointly with the partner and other donors | | Impact | Focuses on the impact of the aid, rather than on aid delivery. Usually, but not always, carried out some time after project completion | | Participatory | Evaluation carried out with or by the primary stakeholders, usually the project beneficiaries | | Process | One aid process or procedure, such as procurement or project monitoring | |
